Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about StudyLumina — the readiness score, the AI Tutor, and what makes it different.

What is StudyLumina?

StudyLumina is an exam preparation platform that computes an objective Exam Readiness Score (ERS, 0–100) from your real quiz performance. Unlike flashcard apps, it tells you objectively how prepared you are for a specific exam, which chapters are weak, and exactly what to study today.

How does the Exam Readiness Score (ERS) work?

The ERS is computed by a deterministic TypeScript algorithm — never by AI. It combines five factors per chapter: quiz accuracy, study recency (exponential decay after 48h), material coverage, answer speed, and difficulty weighting. The course-level score is the weighted average of all chapter scores.

How is the ERS different from self-assessment?

Self-assessment is a feeling. The ERS is calculated from your persisted quiz attempts in the database — reproducible, explainable, and based on real evidence. It reflects what you actually know, not what you think you know.

Is StudyLumina free to use?

Yes. The free plan works without a credit card: unlimited courses, 2 PDFs per course, 10 quiz generations per month, 20 AI Tutor messages per month. Premium unlocks unlimited PDFs, exam simulation, and advanced AI Tutor modes.

How is StudyLumina different from Quizlet?

Quizlet is a flashcard drill tool — it doesn't tell you if you will pass your exam. StudyLumina computes an objective score from your chapter-level performance, identifies your weaknesses, and gives you a daily action plan based on your exam date.

How is StudyLumina different from NotebookLM?

NotebookLM answers questions about your documents. StudyLumina does that too (via the AI Tutor), but also generates chapter-aligned quiz questions, tracks your attempt history, computes a readiness score, runs timed exam simulations, and tells you what to do tomorrow.

Does StudyLumina work in French?

Yes, fully. The interface, AI-generated quiz questions, and the AI Tutor all work in French. StudyLumina was built in French and English simultaneously from the first commit.

Does the AI Tutor make things up?

No. The AI Tutor uses RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation): it searches your uploaded documents for the most relevant passages and grounds every answer in those excerpts with page citations. If the answer is not in your source documents, it says so explicitly.

What file types can I upload to StudyLumina?

Currently PDF files. The ingestion pipeline extracts text (including mathematical notation via OCR), detects chapter structure, generates embeddings for semantic search, and queues flashcard and quiz generation automatically.

What is the Today Dashboard?

The Today Dashboard is your daily study command center. It surfaces your current ERS, your three weakest chapters, the next recommended action (which chapter, what format, for how long), and your countdown to exam day.

Can I use StudyLumina for any subject?

Yes. StudyLumina is subject-agnostic and works with any course material that can be uploaded as a PDF. Students use it for law, engineering, medicine, social sciences, language courses, and more.

Can I cancel my Premium plan anytime?

Yes. No commitment, no questions asked. You can cancel from your account settings at any time. Your data is retained for 30 days after cancellation.
